Blog Post #6: Demographics

 I believe the three most important demographic qualities are age, gender, and sexual orientation. To me, these qualities define how different sources of media reach their audience. Being the demographic of an early 20’s, heterosexual female, there are very targeted ads towards my demographic. Ads would look a bit different for someone who is older, identifies as male, and is a part of a different sexual orietnation, like bisexual or homosexual for example. Age is a huge factor, because I think there are a lot of different generational ideas or “inside jokes” if you will that people of similar ages have in common. Younger ages, 20s to 30s (this is a generalization), can have very similar ideas and humor as we grow up with similar values and events. This can be true for any generation, with or without social media. 

I scrolled through Instagram explore page and my for you page on Tiktok to see how platforms fit my demographic. My instagram explore page can describe who I am without using words. I love getting my nails done, I have curly hair, I love cute mental health posts, and I am interested in doing makeup. I think it is really interesting that it can explain so much of my personality without me using that explore feature often. While looking at my Tiktok feed, the first video that came up was a video of SZA at her first arena tour. She is one of my favorite artists, so it did not surprise me that she was the first on my feed. It feels very similar to my Twitter feed, which is all about musicians and new albums that are releasing. I definitely think these are a great reflefction of my preferred demographic qualities. Even comparing for you pages with my roommates (who are of same age and gender as me), we all have a variety of videos that are personalized. However, there are many videos that overlap like popular make up artists or funny skits. One of my roommates is apart of the LGBTQ+ community, and she gets Tiktoks that are tailored to the community, ranging from serious to comedic videos.  It is very interesting trying to understand how different platforms conform to different demographics.
